Randy Marzen, test director at the University of Iowa Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL), joined an Iowa delegation at one of the world’s largest aerospace trade events in July. 

Marzen, a former U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel who goes by the call sign “Tarzan,” showcased OPL’s flight testing capabilities at the Farnborough International Airshow, a biennial event held outside London, England. OPL specializes in testing emerging technologies early and often aboard fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems, while also providing comprehensive design, fabrication, and ground support.

“Farnborough brought together some of the world’s leading aerospace and defense organizations, making it an outstanding opportunity to highlight the capabilities we have at OPL,” Marzen said. “Our team specializes in helping developers test and evaluate emerging technologies in real-world operational environments, and there was strong interest in how those capabilities can accelerate innovation. It was also exciting to represent the University of Iowa as part of a broader effort to showcase Iowa’s growing aerospace ecosystem.” 

The delegation attended the airshow to promote Iowa as a destination for aerospace and defense companies. Organizers reported 141,580 trade and public visitors from 136 countries attended the 2026 event.

The Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) has been spearheading a new aerospace initiative called Ascentus, which highlights the region’s strengths, including a workforce of more than 9,000 aerospace-related employees, experienced engineers, precision manufacturers, avionics expertise, and an advanced industrial supply chain. In addition, CID offers more than 1,300 acres of development-ready property capable of supporting large-scale aerospace production and expansion. 

Other members of the delegation included representatives from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa State University. OPL’s unique flight-testing capabilities have been highlighted as a valuable asset in attracting aerospace and defense investment to Iowa and supporting the growth of the state’s aerospace ecosystem.
